The waiting is over. Patriots–Seahawks opens the 2026 NFL season with a rematch that carries history—and a new set of questions for both teams.

Wednesday gets the opening kickoff

There is a particular kind of optimism that arrives with the first real football game. Every fan has a theory. Every fantasy roster still looks brilliant. Nobody has spent Sunday night explaining why the standings are misleading. Tonight, the talking finally gives way to a scoreboard, and the NFL has chosen a matchup with plenty attached to it.

The New England Patriots visit the Seattle Seahawks at Lumen Field on Wednesday, September 9, 2026. Kickoff is 5:20 PM in Tucson, the local equivalent of the advertised 8:20 PM Eastern start. NBC and Peacock carry the national broadcast. For Arizona fans, that means the new season begins in the early evening, with the first quarter arriving before the usual prime-time routine.

The rematch brings history, but no head start

Seattle won the last meeting 29–13 in Super Bowl LX. The champions now welcome New England to their own building, where a championship banner ceremony will add weight to the occasion. That is the backdrop. The useful football question is how each team handles the transition from remembering February to executing in September.

Our view: the opening possessions should be judged by their quality, not their theatrical value. A long touchdown will dominate the conversation, but a clean protection call, an avoided penalty or a successful third-and-short can reveal just as much. Watch whether both teams can stay patient when the first planned answer fails. An opener rewards adjustments as well as preparation.

New England’s first job: give Maye clear answers

Drake Maye enters the opener with A.J. Brown and Romeo Doubs among New England’s receiving options. Their presence gives the Patriots an interesting set of choices about where to attack and how to distribute targets. We will learn more from how those pieces are used together than from simply reading the names on the roster.

The tactical question we are watching is whether New England can create a reliable short completion before it needs a spectacular deep one. Quick answers can help an offense escape difficult down-and-distance situations. If the Patriots can force defenders to respect that underneath game, opportunities farther downfield may follow. If they repeatedly need a low-percentage throw to rescue a possession, the evening becomes considerably harder.

Seattle’s first job: make the new offense look comfortable

Seattle has a new offensive coordinator in Brian Fleury, while rookie running back Jadarian Price is another player to watch. Those changes give the defending champions something fresh to show. A familiar uniform does not mean every sequence will look like last season, especially when the person choosing the plays has changed.

Our focus is the connection between the running game and the passing game. Does a run on first down produce a manageable next snap, or simply leave another long-yardage problem? Can Seattle find a rhythm without needing a broken tackle or an exceptional catch on every series? Consistent modest gains are not the most glamorous opening-night storyline, but they can decide who controls the fourth quarter.

The game inside the game: possessions and finishing

Keep a simple three-part scorecard: starting field position, third-down distance and red-zone results. Those measures explain why two teams with similar yardage totals can experience very different games. A defense that repeatedly forces long drives may be doing its job even when it allows completions. An offense that crosses midfield and stalls may be moving the ball without changing the pressure on its opponent.

Turnovers can overturn that picture in a moment. The especially costly mistake is the one that gives an opponent both possession and a short field. For viewers, the question after a turnover is not only who made it. Ask what the other team does with the opportunity. Seven points, three points and an empty possession tell three different stories about the same sudden chance.

Our prediction: Seattle 24, New England 20

River Road Review prediction: Seahawks 24, Patriots 20. This is our editorial pick, not a reported result or a betting-market line. We lean toward Seattle because opening at home gives the champions a useful setting for a close game, while New England’s receiving additions offer a plausible route to a more competitive meeting.

The path to a Patriots win is easy to describe: protect possessions, turn promising drives into touchdowns and make Seattle respond under pressure. The reason our pick remains close is that those are achievable football tasks. A prediction should identify the argument, not pretend the game has already happened. If New England wins the turnover battle and finishes efficiently, our Seattle lean could age badly before dessert.

Put River Road in your opening-night plans

A season opener deserves more than a distracted glance between errands. Bring the friend who already has playoff predictions, the one who studies every formation and the one who mainly wants dinner. There will be enough football to argue about, and opening night is a fine time to begin the annual tradition of everybody explaining what their team should have done.
